An interesting phenomenon occurs tonight: a blue supermoon. The last one occurred in December 2009, and the next one won't be until August 2032. So, enjoy this one!
A blue moon is simply the second full moon in a calendar month. The first one occurred back on August 2nd. Tonight’s blue moon, again, is a supermoon. This happens when the moon is full during the closest point in its orbit around Earth. This gives its appearance an extra pop, making it look up to 8% bigger and 16% brighter than a typical full moon, according to The Old Farmer's Almanac. Today’s supermoon will be the biggest and brightest of 2023 because the moon will be "exceptionally close" to Earth at 222,043 miles, according to Farmer's Almanac, nearly 17,000 miles closer than average.
People – especially “spiritual but not religious” people who tend to search for meaning anywhere and everywhere but the Word of God – try to look for meanings and signs in such events. From what I can gather, this day will fill people with a variety of emotions and seems to generate (according to some “experts”) a sense of impending change. It’s hard to find specifics regarding the emotions and changes such an uncommon celestial happening generates. I’d compare it to reading your horoscope, which, I’d only recommend reading for comic relief.
Any special plans for this day of the blue supermoon? Weather-permitting, it will be my privilege to officiate at a small private outdoor wedding on an area lake. Afterward, weather-permitting, I’ll try to land the “fish of 10,000 casts” on this “once-in-a-decade day.” Plenty of opportunities in these activities to experience a variety of emotions.
As far as changes generated by such a cosmic event, the only upcoming change I’m aware of will occur around September 15th: my savings account will lose a significant amount of money as I make my third quarterly estimated tax payment of the year.
Don’t let yourself get distracted by people trying to “interpret” such signs and wonders. Admire God’s handiwork – what a creation he’s given us for our enjoyment! As I admire God’s handiwork this evening, I’ll keep in mind his greatest work. “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8) “The blood of Jesus, (God’s) Son, purifies us from all sin.” (1 John 1:7) “Christ has indeed been raised from the dead…He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 15:20,57)
