In order to win most any military conflict, even today, you’ve got to have ground troops in place. The military has a term for this. They call it “boots on the ground.” Even with all of the technology and drones and long-range missiles available, “boots on the ground” are still necessary for ultimate victory.
When it comes to spiritual warfare, Christians understand that the power doesn’t come from human effort or strategizing, but from God himself. Our role as God’s people is to put on the full armor of God and to wield the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. (Ephesians 6:10-18)
One more thing we can “do:” get “knees on the ground” in prayer. Prayer is directed to our all-powerful, all-merciful, all-knowing Lord. The more knees on the ground (whether literally or figuratively), the better. God’s people are encouraged when we pray for one another. And God’s power is accessed – he hears and answers according to his will.
This week, my house is full of people. And my heart is full. Only one of my children (recently married and now living in New Mexico) is unable to be here. Otherwise, all of my children and their families (including 5 grandchildren) are spending time with us. So while I’m not on vacation (on call for emergencies and preaching this coming Sunday), I am also on a sort of vacation?!
I’m an early riser, up earlier than most everyone else, sometimes by as much as two hours; there’s a time difference factor in place for one family in particular this week. Early mornings are always a chance to clear my head and catch my breath. It’s also a chance to lighten my spiritual and emotional load and unburden myself to my Savior.
During this early morning time, I’m able to spend unhurried, refreshing time with “knees on the ground.” I go to the Lord in prayer on behalf of others. And I go in prayer on behalf of my family and myself. Sometimes, I just didn’t know what to say, but God always knows what I need.
Knees on the ground. In prayer. Heart, mind, and thoughts directed to the Father of heavenly lights, the giver of every good and perfect gift…the Giver of all I have and need, and more. It’s a daily practice for God’s people. It’s necessary and refreshing. For me, mornings are a great time to do this – “By the mercies of the Lord we are not consumed, for his compassions do not fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:22-23)
Excuse me, but I’ve got some praying to do…
