God's Powerful Word
“For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ” (2 Corinthians 4:6).  In the beginning, God said, “Let there be …”  And it was so. From the smallest blade of the grass to the tallest redwood, from beautiful lakes and streams to waterfalls cascading over cliffs, from the simplest single cell organism to the intricacies of the human body, God’s powerful Word called this universe into existence from nothing.
God’s powerful Word is still at work. His holy law cuts to our hearts and exposes our sinfulness. His Word works in our hearts to lead us to realize our need for his saving work. His holy gospel of Jesus shatters our unbelief and gives us faith. His Word shines the light of Jesus into our hearts and makes us living believers. His Word gives us the knowledge of the true God, what he is like and what he has done for us. His Word — spoken, read, sung, and connected with the sacraments — is what has made us children of God.
Because God’s Word is so powerful, God’s Word is what the church is to be hearing, proclaiming, believing and confessing. That is why the Word of God permeates our worship with several Scripture lessons, psalms, confession of faith, hymns and liturgical songs which proclaim the Word, Bible-based sermon and the sacraments. That is why we have numerous Bible classes, Bible Blitz, Sunday school, and VBS. That is why we operate a Lutheran elementary school and preschool.
The power of God’s Word was at work in the beginning when God created all things. The powerful Word is still at work in our hearts, in our lives, in our church and in the world. The Bible is not just a book of nice information. The sacraments are not just nice ceremonies. The Word of God is God’s power at work. Let us hear the Word regularly so that God’s power can work in us and strengthen us. Let us proclaim the Word faithfully so that God’s power will be at work in others in our community and throughout the world.
